Wilhelm, Hagen selected as CBE distinguished teaching, research fellows

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics has selected Wendy Wilhelm of the Department of Finance and Marketing as its 2010 Distinguished Teaching Fellow and Professor of Economics Daniel A. Hagen as its 2010 Distinguished Research Fellow.

Distinguished Teaching Fellow Award

The Distinguished Teaching Fellow Award recognizes a tenured faculty member in the College of Business and Economics who has demonstrated sustained excellence through his or her scholarly contributions to the teaching mission of the College and to student learning in the fields of business.

Wilhelm, a professor of Marketing, joined WWU in 1986. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and the University of Geneva, her master’s degree in Business Administration from Cornell University, and her doctorate from the University of Washington.

Wilhelm is highly regarded by students and colleagues for her teaching abilities and innovations. In 2007 she was honored with the College’s Allette & Cayden Chase Franklin Teaching Award. She has also received numerous merit awards based on her teaching contributions. The high quality of her teaching has attracted external support from organizations such as the Advertising Education Foundation, the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation, and the General Motors Internship Program.

Wilhelm has worked vigorously on academic program development during her career at WWU, including the Marketing Internship Program as well as courses in marketing research, integrated marketing communications and sustainable marketing. Her Marketing Internship Program has served as a model for other internship programs in the College of Business and Economics and has offered many students an opportunity to get a jump start on their career.

Wilhelm is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of marketing education, as she has served multiple terms on the board of directors of the Marketing Educator’s Association. She currently serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Marketing Education. She also has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings relating to marketing education.

Distinguished Research Fellow Award

The Distinguished Research Fellow Award recognizes a tenured faculty member in the College of Business and Economics who has demonstrated sustained excellence through his or her scholarly contributions to research, creative scholarship, and publication while at WWU’s College of Business and Economics.

Hagen joined WWU in 1988. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. His research focuses on environmental and resource economics as well as international trade.

Hagen’s research record reflects a sustained level of activity, as he has written or presented over 60 publications, technical reports, and conference presentations. His publications represent an emphasis on very high-quality work as his research has been published in prestigious journals including the American Economic Review, Land Economics, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, and Environmental and Resource Economics.

Hagen’s research has raised the profile of the College of Business and Economics and WWU as his research has been referenced by scholars around the world. His research on environmental valuation has been cited in numerous textbooks; in addition, Hagen’s research has policy implications for a variety of environmental economics applications, such as valuing air pollution and forest lands.

Hagen is sought after as a research colleague due to his intellectual capabilities, research skills and collegial qualities. As noted by one of his research partners, "In the course of carrying out research with Dan, I gained enormous respect for Dan's intellectual rigor, his critical thinking, and his skill set as an economist."

Hagen’s research collaborators have included numerous colleagues at Western, as well as researchers from other universities. In addition to his research accomplishments, Hagen is admired by students and colleagues as an outstanding teacher. He has also shared his expertise outside the academic area by serving as a consultant to a number of public agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and private firms.
