This summer, students and community members can take journalism courses at WWU

Western Washington University will offer three new journalism courses this summer, “Publications: From Concept to Design,” “Blogging” and “Digital Storytelling,” that are open not only to current WWU students but to the general public as well.

The magazine-planning course “Publications: From Concept to Design” is designed for those who love magazines and/or may be considering a career as a magazine writer, editor or designer. Participants will build a prospectus portfolio piece that will showcase writing and graphic design skills and will include a concept and target audience plan and a design prototype. This course is open to all students and the public.

During the “Blogging” course, participants will explore blogging in a professional setting and develop skills in writing and simple publishing techniques online. It is intended for those interested in either personal blogs or blogging for business. This course has a prerequisite of Journalism 207 or enrollment with instructor’s permission.

The course “Digital Storytelling” will teach the basic steps to plan, produce and edit journalistic stories that combine written components, audio, video and graphics to create compelling and engaging multimedia reports. This course has a prerequisite of Journalism 207 or enrollment with instructor’s permission.

The Department of Journalism is again offering its “Diversity, Mass Media and Social Change” course, which examines who covers the news, how it is covered and how coverage affects audiences. It is a hybrid class, with the first two hours spent in the classroom and the third hour completed online. No previous journalism experience is necessary.

The public is invited to enroll in these courses as well as other WWU Summer Session offerings. Details and registration information are on the Web at http://www.wwu.edu/summer or by contacting summer.session@wwu.edu or (360) 650-3308.
