CASCAID conference on global health takes place on WWU campus May 6 to 8

The Western Washington University Debate Union will host its Seventh Annual Community Advocacy Support Center (CASCAID) Conference on “Global Health: Confronting the Challenges of Privilege and Inequity” from May 6-8 on WWU’s campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

The CASCAID Conference is an opportunity for advocates, academics and activists to come together to exchange ideas and methods on the selected theme of global health.

• 6 p.m., Thursday, May 6 at WWU’s Underground Coffeehouse – Film showing of “Salud!” about Cuba’s health care system.
• 7 p.m., Friday, May 7 at the Viking Union Multi-Purpose Room – Keynote address by Tim Costello, a long-time AIDS activist and founder of the award-winning Slum Doctor Program. His address will deal with issues of privilege, activism, and our shared humanity.
• 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, May 8 at the Communications Facility – Additional conference sessions featuring a variety of workshops, academic paper panels, and discussion forums centered on the conference theme of global health.

“The intention is to have a broad and inclusive conference which will allow people of differing perspectives to come together to have a meaningful exchange of views,” Korry Harvey, co-director of CASCAID, said. “Over the past several years, the CASCAID Conference has seen participants from nearly a dozen states, more than 20 universities and colleges, and three countries.”

The CASCAID Conference is sponsored by WWU’s Debate Union, Associated Student Productions, Department of Communication, and the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force.
