Safety committee asks for smokers to avoid doing so around others

The Washington State Attorney General’s Office has determined -- based on the 2005 tobacco smoking amendment to the Washington State Smoking in Public Places statute -- that pathways, bus stops and other common, outdoor gathering places used by employees and students must remain smoke-free.

Members of Western Washington University's Central Health and Safety Committee believe that requesting cooperation is the best first approach for Western to seek compliance and to help prevent second-hand smoke reaching those who do not wish to breathe it.

The committee requests that tobacco smokers be considerate and avoid smoking when they are around others on walkways, paths, at bus stops and other areas of pedestrian congestion. For those on campus who choose to smoke tobacco, please select an area where smoke will not affect other people.

The committee also requests that smokers help keep the Western grounds beautiful by not littering.
