Rivera to share excerpts from her course on African-American literature

Lysa Rivera, an assistant professor of English at Western Washington University, will present "Subverting Norms: African Americans in U.S. Literature" in a Faculty GUR Group event.

Faculty and staff are invited to explore excerpts of Rivera's "Introduction to African-American Literature" course and reflect with participants on the instructional methods she employs.

What historical, political, cultural and social contexts have been central to shaping and animating African American literary traditions? How do constructions of racial, national, sexual, gender and class identities inform African American literary expressions? 

All faculty and staff are invited to attend this two-part “mini course” offered on two dates, each covering different material. Attend both or either:

• PART 2: Tuesday, November 27, 4:30-5:30, Wilson Library 270

The idea behind the Faculty GUR Group is that faculty -- as well as students -- need to sustain their general education. With this in mind, the Faculty GUR Group was formed to bring together people from different departments across the university to allow each participant to enhance their general education by acquiring useful knowledge their colleagues consider basic.
