Fall enrollment for freshmen and transfer students of color is the highest ever

Western Washington University’s fall enrollment figures show that the freshman class is the largest in the history of the university. And fall enrollment for freshmen and new transfer students of color is the highest ever at Western.

Western Washington University plans to test its emergency notification system known as Western Alert at 9:40 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15.

At the same time as the Western Alert test, a small pilot group of faculty, staff and students will be participating in a test lockdown drill on campus.

Western Alert is a group of ways to reach students, faculty and staff with important safety information. The alert system typically is tested twice a year – in the fall and spring. The following Western Alert elements will be tested on Oct. 15:

Western Washington University's Andy Klein has secured a three-year, $447,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research to investigate new and innovative ways to teach key concepts of electrical engineering.

Joseph E. Trimble, professor of Psychology at Western Washington University, has co-authored a new book entitled “Foundations of Multicultural Psychology: Research to Inform Effective Practice” which will be published later this month by the American Psychological Institute.

The book was co-written by Timothy Smith, a professor and department chair of the Department of Psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Western Washington University was recently ranked seventh in the “50 Best Colleges by the Sea” list by Collegerankings.com.

The rankings were compiled using methodology including proximity to the water; specific marine educational centers, such as Western’s Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes; marine-related degrees; and recreational opportunities on the sea.

The Outback Farm, a joint program of the Western Washington University Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Associated Students of Western, was recently named one of the top 40 ranking college farms in America by CollegeRanker.com.

Farms were selected based on criteria including student involvement, hands-on experiences, volunteering opportunities and community outreach programs.

Western Washington University Professor of English Laura Laffrado will discuss her recent research project focused on early-20th century Pacific Northwest author Ella Higginson from 4-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 in the Special Collections area of Western’s Wilson Library.

Western’s Center for International Studies has released its line-up of globally-focused films for fall quarter.

This monthly film series is free and open to the public.

Faculty and student organizations are encouraged to suggest films that can supplement a course, an event or a discussion that raises awareness about other cultures, global issues, or viewing the world from different perspectives.

Western Washington University’s new downtown office on the corner ground-level floor of the Herald Building officially opened for business on Monday, Sept. 21.

The new office at 1155 North State St. will serve as a welcome-to-Western center in the heart of the city. Seven members of Western’s University Advancement – including Alumni Association staff – are joined by student staff and interns at the downtown office called Western City Center.

Western President Bruce Shepard visited the Center on opening day.
