Registration open for LGBTQ Safe Zone Ally training

The LGBTQ Safe Zone Program at Western Washington University is a visible network of volunteers who are committed to creating a community of respect and dignity for students, staff and faculty who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning. Safe Zone makes it possible to easily identify allies at Western -- individuals who are committed to creating an environment in which all people are free to thrive academically, professionally and personally. Through education, advocacy, visibility and skill development, the LGBTQ Safe Zone supports faculty, staff and students to become allies for the LGBTQ community.

Those who want to be recognized as an LGBTQ Safe Zone ally at Western must participate in a three-hour workshop to build on knowledge and awareness of issues within the LGBTQ community, reflect on personal assumptions, biases and beliefs and gain tools in how to create a safe space for members of the LGBTQ community and for other allies. These workshops are geared for students, staff and faculty, and organizers strongly encourage people to avoid signing up as a whole office, department or class so that individuals can get a deeper experience by going through the training with others from all over Western's campus.

To register for a training session, visit www.wwu.edu/safezone and click on Ally Training to complete the registration form. For more information, contact Stephanie Zee at stephanie.zee@wwu.edu or at (360) 650-4927.
