Randy Dorn to speak at WWU Compass to Campus brunch May 19

Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn will speak at a brunch on Sunday, May 19 to benefit the nationally recognized and award-winning Compass 2 Campus program at Western Washington University.

The Champagne Brunch Fundraiser for Compass 2 Campus will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Viking Union on May 19, during the Back 2 Bellingham Alumni and Family Weekend.

“We are delighted that Superintendent Randy Dorn will be providing the keynote address and deeply appreciate all the support for Compass 2 Campus, which is making a significant difference in the lives of children across Skagit and Whatcom counties,” said Cyndie Shepard, Compass 2 Campus director.

A lifelong resident of the state of Washington, Randy Dorn has been an elementary and middle school teacher, a principal and a legislator. For nine years he was executive director of Public School Employees of Washington, the second largest educational employee’s organization in the state of Washington. In 2008, Dorn was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction. Dorn won re-election to a second four-year term as state superintendent in the November election.

Compass 2 Campus, a proactive effort that sends trained WWU student mentors into schools, is in its fourth year at Western. The program offers academic mentoring in areas that lack funding in the elementary, middle and high schools throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties. The goal is to establish a connection between schools lacking funds and college students to increase graduations rates and inspire students to further their education.

To date, the innovative mentoring program has now served thousands of students from the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades in schools in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Over the past three years, Western student mentors have provided nearly 85,000 hours of mentoring service to those students.

Single seats for the brunch are $35. Table sponsorships (table of 10) are $250. All proceeds from the event will support the Compass 2 Campus program.
