Prior approval required for aircraft use on behalf of Western

As part of the budget reduction process, Western Washington University discontinued the purchase of aircraft liability insurance this past July. The policy provided liability insurance protection for use of "non-owned aircraft" on behalf of Western, which included the use of charter, rental or privately-owned airplanes and helicopters.

Without this insurance safeguard, Western employees need to be extra diligent about notifying Risk Management of the potential use of charter, rental or privately-owned airplanes and helicopters. Risk Management will evaluate the risk and, if acceptable, consider potential risk mitigation arrangements such as certificates of liability insurance from aircraft owners/operators and contractual or hold-harmless agreements.

The university procedure Requesting Use of Non-Owned Aircraft outlines the steps for submitting a request for approval.

The use of commercial airlines on scheduled service is not subject to this procedure.
