WWU open, but caution urged for those traveling

The snow that came down Saturday night in Bellingham is still around, but conditions have allowed Western Washington University to remain open.

However, a snow and ice alert has been issued due to the extent of snow and ice accumulation on surface areas used by pedestrians, including parking lots. The university recommends that those coming to campus today take appropriate precautions for their safety, including the use of appropriate footwear for conditions and the selection of walking routes. Environmental Health and Safety at WWU has advised that those wearing slip-on traction devices should take them off immediately upon entering buildings. They're great on ice and snow but slippery on smooth hard floors, and there have been injuries as a result of this. Those wearing the devices should take a moment to remove them when indoors.

The WWU student shuttle was shut down Sunday night due to unsafe road conditions. For updated information on the shuttle, call (360) 650-7960.

Forecasters are predicting the possibility of several inches of snow for the Bellingham area Tuesday night. The snow should turn to rain by Wednesday, but hazardous conditions are likely to remain.

The Storm Line/Emergency Hot Line at (360) 650-6500 will be updated with current information, as will the WWU website and the WWU emergency page.
