Viking Jam kicks off WWU basketball season

Team scrimmages, a high-flying slam dunk contest, a heated three-point shootout and performances by the Western Washington University Cheerleading and Hip-Hop squads highlighted another great event at the 29th Annual Viking Jam held Thursday, November 5 at the MAC Gym at the Wade King Student Recreation Center on the WWU campus.

Freshman forward Daulton Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) won the slam dunk contest, narrowly edging out high-flying junior Jeffrey Parker (Richmond, CA/Salesian).

The three-point shootout between the men’s and women’s squads came down to the wire with several sharpshooters putting on a display, but the men narrowly gained the win 48-45. Sophomore guardBrett Kingma (Mill Creek, WA/Oregon/WSU) hit 12 three-pointers, while the women were paced by 10 from junior guard Taylor Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) and 8 by freshman guard Amanda Lance (Buckley, WA/White River).

The WWU men (2-1 overall) returns to the court Sunday for an exhibition game vs. the Seattle Mountaineers at 2 pm at Whatcom Pavilion.

The WWU women are prepping for their season opener November 13 vs. Fresno Pacific at the Humboldt State Invitational.
