Harrington Field gets inaugural play

A pair of first-half goals proved to be the difference as Western Washington University fell to NCAA Division I Seattle University, 2-0, in a men's soccer exhibition game Saturday night at Robert S. Harrington Field on the WWU campus. It was the first varsity game played on the new field and the first time Western soccer has played on campus since 2000.

Brady Ballew opened the scoring in the seventh minute, blasting home a half-volley from six yards after a low cross from Josh Greene.

WWU had a good chance to equalize just three minutes later, as off a corner kick, Tye Hastings and Kurtis Pederson headers forced tough back-to-back saves by SU goalkeeper Shane Haworth.

But the Redhawks got a second goal in the 33rd minute, as Hamza Haddadi scored on a header, finishing off a Chase Hanson cross.

The Vikings had an 11-9 advantage in shots, forcing SU goalkeepers to make six saves.

WWU continues pre-season exhibition play Tuesday, visiting University of British Columbia.
