Delegation from Korea university visits WWU

Western Washington University hosted a delegation from Gyeongju University (GU) for a campus visit on Monday, June 1. During the visit, Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard and Gyeongju University President Soon Ja Lee, signed an Academic Cooperation Agreement between the two institutions.

The Academic Cooperation Agreement outlines several areas of cooperation between the two institutions, including GU students studying overseas at Western through Extended Education’s Language and Culture Programs, the potential of student and faculty exchanges, and cooperation in other academic activities.

In addition to President Lee, the delegation included Larry Chong, Gyeongju University’s Dean of the International Department, and Jacky Chung, Director of the Greater Vancouver Education Group. GU is located in the city of Gyeongju, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The university was founded in the year of the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and has developed as one of the leading universities in the area of tourism, culture, arts and health.

Western, often in conjunction with Bellingham’s Sister Cities Association, has sponsored programs with Korean partners for the past 10 years and has brought hundreds of Korean students for educational programs.
