Oct. 9 talk to focus on digitization of school newspaper

The student newspaper at Western Washington University has gone digital, and all 110 years of the paper -- dating back to 1899 -- are now searchable online.

Peter Smith, Special Collections librarian at WWU, and Marian Alexander, retired head of Special Collections, will talk about the project from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Village Books.

Published continuously since 1899, the paper has chronicled the social, academic, athletic and creative life of the Western community. The Oct. 9 presentation will outline the history of the digitization project to this unique resource, reveal highlights of Western’s past and its close connections to Bellingham and the region, and demonstrate how to search and find articles in the Western Front Historical Collection, which is made possible by the generous support of Don and Cindy Hacherl (class of 1984) and Bert Halprin (class of 1971).

The presentation is part of the WWU Connections brown-bag series.
