Wallin gives presentation, gets two grants to fund research project

David Wallin, a professor of environmental science in Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University, gave a talk at the US Chapter of the International Association of Landscape Ecologists' 26th Annual Landscape Ecology Symposium in Portland, Ore., in April: "Wallin, D.O., M. Harmon, W.B. Cohen and R. Kennedy. 2011. Modeling regional scale carbon dynamics in Pacific Northwest forests: 1972-2008."

Also, Wallin has had two proposals recently funded. The money will fund work on a project titled "Patterns of Genetic Diversity and Connectivity Among Mountain Goat Populations in Washington and Southern British Columbia." Both grants are to support a master's student and five-or-so undergraduate interns. The students will conduct fieldwork in the alpine zone in the Washington Cascades and the Coast Range and southern Rocky Mountains in British Columbia during the summer of 2011. One grant was from The Mountaineers Foundation, for $4,000, and the other was from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, for $10,700.
