Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action in Classified Staff Searches

Multiple federal and state civil rights laws require that all job applicants be provided with an equal opportunity to seek employment at Western. Affirmative action regulations likewise require that search committees engage in proactive efforts to build diverse applicant pools. This training explores what these requirements mean in practice, and what we can do to ensure that searches for classified staff are equitable and inclusive of diverse applicants at every step.

This optional training is geared towards members of classified staff search committees and hiring authorities for these positions who have not recently attended search briefings provided by the Equal Opportunity Office for professional staff or faculty search committees.  Upcoming dates are as follows, and employees can register by clicking here and selecting “Equal Opportunity Office.”

  •        Friday, Sept. 30, 9-10 a.m.
  •        Wednesday, Oct. 26, 10-11 a.m.

Fostering Inclusive Learning Environments for Transgender, Genderqueer and Non-Binary Students

Drawing on individual narratives and survey research, this workshop raises awareness about the diversity of transgender and non-binary gender identities and experiences. Through facilitated discussion, participants will increase their understanding of how discrimination and marginalization can impact trans, genderqueer and non-binary students’ experiences in the classroom and our campus community. Faculty and staff will learn about important protections for trans students under laws including Title IX, and build skills to create classrooms and other spaces that are intentionally respectful of and welcoming to transgender, genderqueer and non-binary students.

This workshop is offered through the Campus Equity & Inclusion Forum on Friday, Oct. 21, from 9:-10:50 a.m.  Faculty may also be interested in the Exploring Critical Trans Pedagogies workshop on Thursday, Nov.3, from 4-5:30 p.m.  Individuals may register for these workshops by clicking here and selecting “Campus Equity & Inclusion Forum.”
