John Gilbertson (Chemistry) awarded $45K for research

John Gilbertson (Chemistry) recently received a Single Investigator Cottrell College Science Award for $44,965 from the Research Corporation to continue his work on developing environmentally friendly small molecules that mimic the biologically important enzyme nitrogenase. These target molecules are important in studying the production of ammonia (a necessary nutrient in growing crops that is responsible for feeding more than 40 percent of the world's population). The reaction currently used to make ammonia accounts for 1 to 2 percent of the annual global energy consumption.
