In Memoriam: Chuck Antholt

Charles (Chuck) H. Antholt passed away on Saturday, Nov.12. 

He was born on July 20, 1942 in Marinette, to Harold and Amanda Antholt. He graduated from Coleman High School in Coleman in 1960 and went on to earn a B.S. degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964 and a M.S. from Cornell University in 1973. 

He met his wife Sharron while working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Pakistan in 1965; they married the next year. After more than 30 years of living in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and India helping working farmers - first with U.S.A.I.D. and then with the World Bank - Chuck and Sharron moved to Lummi Island, Washington, in 1997. Both taught at Western Washington University, and this past August they celebrated 50 years of marriage. 

A farmer from the beginning, Chuck found solace in the continual work of his garden on Lummi. Never a day passed when he was not outside caring for his flower beds, vegetable garden and fruit trees. He was also a devoted Economics professor who loved his students and an avid reader with an amazing memory of history and facts. 

With his generous and outgoing nature it was important to him to be an active volunteer in his community, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. But most importantly, Chuck will be remembered for his love for his family and friends. No matter the years or the distance, he made it a priority in his life to maintain lifelong friendships with people around the world. 

He is survived by his wife, Sharron; his daughter, Sandra; his granddaughter, Sofia; his dog, Ollie and his cat, Buster. 

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. at the Lummi Island Congregational Church, 3913 Legoe Bay Road, Lummi Island.
