Biology’s Craig Moyer awarded Consortium for Ocean Leadership grant

Craig Moyer, Western Washington University professor of Biology, was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Consortium for Ocean Leadership for his continued work on an international oceanographic research program.

Moyer said the grant was awarded to support his work on the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program’s Expedition 331, sampling along a transect of the Iheya North hydrothermal system in the Pacific Ocean’s Okinawa Trough off of Japan aboard the Japanese drilling ship, Chikyu.

The transect encompassed many of the aspects of a hydrothermal system, and has already provided insight into the composition and interaction of the deep subsurface biosphere with the detection and discovery of subsurface iron-oxidizing bacteria, Moyer said.
