The fall quarter issue of the newsletter for the Veteran Safe Zone project on campus has been released.

The aim of the Veteran Safe Zone project is to improve the campus climate for student veterans by exhibiting outward support, respect and honor for these students regardless of one's own political views. A Veteran Safe Zone will be identified by a logo, and these logos indicate a location where veterans on campus could go to feel safe and supported.

Officials at the Western Washington University Student Health Center will be dispensing free H1N1 flu nasal spray vaccines from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (or as long as vaccine availability lasts) on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center on campus.

According to regulations from the Whatcom County Health Department, the vaccines are available only for healthy, low-risk students, faculty and staff ages 24 and younger. The H1N1 vaccines are not available for family members of students, faculty or staff.

Georgie Muska, program coordinator for The Intensive English Program, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Oct. 13, 2009, after a battle with cancer.

Georgie was loved for the connections that she made with international students. Her unflagging optimism, her irrepressible British wit and her selfless support for our students and staff will be sorely missed.

The Center for Instructional Innovation at Western Washington University is accepting nominations for this year's Innovative Teaching Showcase through Dec. 1.

Each year, the CII works with selected WWU instructors to document and publish their innovative instruction online. This year’s Showcase theme, “Effective Teaching in Large Classes,” seeks to honor faculty members who take on this sometimes daunting task.

On Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at approximately 4:47 p.m., a Western Washington University student was walking through the Sehome Arboretum on his way to a campus lab. As he approached campus, two males walking in front of him turned with hoods up and bandanas over their faces and confronted him with a handgun and a knife. They took the student’s backpack and iPod and fled into the arboretum.

Faculty members should submit their winter quarter coursepacks (student class manuals) to the WWU Copyright Office as soon as possible. Oct. 26 is the due date for submitting coursepacks requiring copyright permission.

Coursepacks not requiring copyright permission should be submitted by Dec. 1.

There's a new crafting group on campus, and all interested employees are welcome to join.

The informal group of Western Washington University employees who like to craft and would like to be inspired by others or would like a dedicated time and place to pursue a hobby meets from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday in AE Room 223. That's at 405 E. 32nd St. on the second floor.

Any portable craft is welcome, and access to a small sink is available at the meeting site.

Meetings start Oct. 21. Parking is free after 5 p.m.

Employees may donate vacation leave, accrued sick leave and personal holiday leave as long as the donations don’t cause them to fall below the minimum balances. Leave donation forms are available online.
