Update: Due to the late arrival of the mechanical equipment, the date of the High Street closure has changed to Oct. 10. Earlier versions of this announcement had the date as Oct. 3.

The contractor working on the remodel of Wilson Library will need to completely close High Street through the WWU campus from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Both lanes will be closed to allow the contractor to hoist some mechanical equipment into the library.

Authors Sherman Alexie and David James Duncan will join musician Jeffrey Foucault at an event benefiting the Liam Wood Flyfishing School to be held at 7 p.m. Friday on the Western Washington University campus.

The event is titled "Salmon worship: Is it wrong?" and is billed as an evening of music and stories with the three men.

The three performers will share the stage, playing music and telling stories back and forth. Funds generated from the event will go directly to support the youth flyfishing programs of the Liam Wood Flyfishing and River Guardian School.

Huxley College of the Environment plans to present a half-day, hands-on introduction to the Global Positioning System (GPS) from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 3, in Arntzen Hall Rooms 14 and 16 (Spatial Analysis Lab). Topics covered include the GPS System and the GPS equipment available at WWU. The class includes a classroom presentation as well as field and lab experience, which will take place rain or shine.

This workshop is offered once each quarter.

People protesting against Ebenal General Inc., general contractor for Western’s Buchanan Towers residence hall addition, were in the area of the Buchanan Towers construction site on south campus this morning. The Laborers Union has a labor dispute with Ebenal.

This is the sixth edition of my “Desk Notes.” For those of you who have not been here this summer, the original concept of the “Desk Notes” was to give a little more insight to staff and faculty on the ongoing construction during the summer. I am uncertain whether I should continue through the academic year as I am acutely aware of the competition for the time and attention of the staff and faculty. On the other hand, I guess you can just hit “delete.” Let me know your thoughts.

Thirty spaces will be reserved in Parking Lot 12A at 10 a.m. Sept. 22 for the Old Main Society lunch.

Parking Lot 14G will be reserved at 4:15 p.m. Sept. 22 for the president's convocation reception.

The parking office will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20, for move-in weekend.

Employees may donate vacation leave, accrued sick leave and personal holiday leave as long as the donations don’t cause them to fall below the minimum balances. Leave donation forms are available online.

Section 10 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between WWU and United Faculty of Western Washington University provides the following information about faculty professional leave:

Professional leave is granted for the purpose of affording faculty members an opportunity to carry forward research, to improve teaching techniques or methods or to participate in other creative endeavors which by their nature and scope enable individuals to enhance their contributions to the programs of the university.
