Michael Lorenzen, a candidate for the position of Library Assistant Dean of Public Services, will present "Academic Library Public Services in 2014 and How to Get There" from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in the Library Presentation Room on campus.

Lorenzen is the head of Reference Services at Central Michigan University's Charles V. Park Library in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

This is the eighth edition of my Desk Notes. Facilities Management has finished up with almost all of the "summer" projects at this point (Yes, I do realize it's fall. I think I was tipped off by the torrential down pours … either that or the consistently bad news coming out of Pullman and Seattle vis-à-vis football) and we are starting to gear up for next summer. We have four major on-going projects that will continue through the academic year. They are the Miller Hall renovation, Wilson Library Special Collections, Chemistry addition and Buchanan Towers addition.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff
Wednesday, Nov. 4, in memory of U. S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Three Niall D. Lyons, 40, of Spokane, who died this week in Afghanistan of injuries sustained when his helicopter crashed.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Wednesday, or first thing Thursday morning, Nov. 6.

An expert on library space planning will lead a presentation and discussion today in the hopes of learning what the Western Washington University community wants in terms of space usage in the Western Libraries.

Scott Bennett, a Yale University Librarian Emeritus and space-planning expert, will lead the discussion from 4 to 5 p.m. today, Nov. 2, in Wilson Library Room 164F, accessible off High Street. During the talk, Bennett plans to share the changing nature of library space utilization and seek feedback from the WWU community.

Open enrollment is on now for medical and dental plans. Open enrollment ends on Nov. 30.

"A Season of Giving," the 2009 campus holiday party for all Western Washington University faculty and staff, will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room on campus.

No shuttle will be provided. Off-campus employees are encouraged to carpool. Parking passes will be distributed upon request to off-campus employees.
