The submission deadline for the 16th Annual Employee Arts & Crafts Show at Western Washington University is Friday, March 5. The show is open to all faculty and staff members. Entry forms are available online at http://www.wwu.edu/depts/artscraftsshow/Exhibitors.shtml.

"Art and Sustainability" is an added theme for 2010, but submissions do not have to fit into the sustainable category to be accepted in the show.

The exhibit runs March 15 to 19 in Viking Union Rooms 565 and 567.

The submission deadline for applications for the Faculty Development Award is 5 p.m. Monday, March 1.

The Center for Instructional Innovation & Assessment at Western Washington University has available a limited number of summer grants for WWU faculty members who wish to use online tools such as tutorials, simulations and discussions to enhance their existing courses.

Fred Ellis passed peacefully at his home on Shaw Island on Friday, Feb. 5, He was 93 years old.

He was a founding member of the Friends of the San Juans and the San Juan Preservation Trust.

Professor Ellis made his first visit to Shaw in 1936, and purchased his first piece of land in 1937, making it his permanent home in 1946.

Monday, Feb. 22 at 8 a.m. when the steam line feeding MH will be shut down. Following the shutdown and cooling of the line, a section of the steam line will be removed and a new rerouted section will be installed. During the shutdown, Dawson Construction will provide some temporary heat in the hallways, as weather demands. All occupants are requested to dress warmly and keep their doors open during the shutdown to enhance air/heat flow.

Western Washington University and the Center for Service-Learning are offering a course on rural Kenya this summer. The class, "Kenya: Field Studies and Collaborative International Service-Learning," will be held during the nine-week Summer Session, with five weeks on the ground in Kenya, from July 5 to Aug. 12.

 

An information session will be held at noon Feb. 22 in College Hall Room 131 to present details of the program.

Betty Young, 59, was born December 15, 1950 in Walla Walla and died Feb. 16 in Bellingham of metastatic liver cancer diagnosed in late October.

She was with her loving and much loved partner of 31 years, Terri McMahan, and dear friend Meg Miller at the time of her death. Betty was raised on the family's centennial wheat farm where she loved to ride horses through the rolling hills.

Teresa J. LaFreniere, age 66 of Bellingham, passed away February 13, 2010 after a courageous two year battle with brain cancer.  She was born June 3, 1943 in Chehalis, WA to Norman and Dorothy (Hogan) Hocking.
