Youth to perform poetry Sunday at Village Books

A handful of teen poets from Shuksan Middle School will perform their work at Village Books from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in a benefit for Brigid Collins.

The five girls have been working throughout the year with Western Washington University students in the elementary education department. The Western students have been planning lessons and conferencing with the Shuksan students as part of a Western course on reading and writing workshops. The course requires a practicum in which pre-service teachers work in the field.

The Western students worked with students in John Horner's eighth grade writing class at Shuksan. They created mini-lessons on editing, publishing and presenting their work. The girls have been writing poems throughout the year, and two of them have had their work published.

Booklets of the youth's poetry will be available at the Brigid Collins table at the event. Donations will be accepted.
