WWU's Carolyn Nielsen to present 'Moment or Movement: U.S. News Coverage of Racial Issues in a Digital Era' Nov. 2

Western Washington University Associate Professor of Journalism Carolyn Nielsen will present "Moment or Movement: U.S. News Coverage of Racial Issues in a Digital Era" at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 in Communications Facility 120 on the WWU campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the WWU chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Nielsen worked in print journalism for a decade before she began teaching at Western. Her experiences as a reporter covering issues of racial violence in Southern California heavily influenced her doctoral dissertation research, which she completed in June.

"Moment or Movement: U.S. News Coverage of Racial Issues in a Digital Era" brings together her research interests examining news coverage of race and the influence of technology in the newsroom. This work stretches beyond "traditional" news outlets to include coverage produced in the emerging Interactive Race Beat journalism and Journalism 3.0 (yes, BuzzFeed) paradigms and foregrounds the voices of the reporters who produced it.

Nielsen's previous work has been published in New Media & Society, Howard Journal of Communications, Newspaper Research Journal, and The Journal of Spanish-Language Media.
