WWU Student Journalists Capture Three Top Prizes the SPJ Regional Mark of Excellence Awards

Western Washington University had three winners and several additional finalists in the Region 10 Mark of Excellence (MOE) Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) in Seattle on April 14.

            SPJ’s Region 10 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

            Winners:

  • The Western Front for Best Non-Daily Newspaper in the Region
  • Kjell Redal (Boulder, Colorado), Best In-Depth Reporting for his “WWU Defies Labor Law” story
  • Jesse Nichols (Indianola), Best Radio Feature for “Yellow Cedars”

            Finalists:

  • Klipsun, finalist for Best Magazine
  • Sarah Climaco (Marysville) and Evan Keen (Puyallup), Non-Fiction Magazine Article finalist for “Bracing for Change”
  • Alyssa Evans (Bonney Lake), Breaking News Reporting finalist for “Shooting at Cascade Mall in Burlington”
  • Sarah Sharp (Bothell), Feature Writing finalist for “Ham Radio Buffs in Blaine Dedicate Themselves to Community Service”
  • Evan Elliot (Federal Way), Online Sports Reporting finalist for “Western Women’s Soccer Wins National Championship”

 

The Front, Redal and Nichols will move on to compete at the national level against other winners from the 12 SPJ regions.
