Woodring releases special issue of 'Journal of Educational Controversy'

Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education has released a special issue of its Journal of Educational Controversy on the theme “School-to-Prison Pipeline and the School to Deportation Pipeline.”

The journal addresses the issue of school policies and practices that criminalize students rather than educate them. Every year, thousands of students in the country are funneled through the public schools into the juvenile justice system because of the school policies and practices. Most of these students are students of color, students with disabilities and students from impoverished neighborhoods.

This issue is co-edited with Daniel Larner from Western’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies and features a separate section devoted to informing the public of the problem, cases, laws and statistics in Washington state. Also included is a video interview with one of the authors, former Washington State Supreme Court Justice Bobbe Bridge, who formed the Center for Children and Youth Justice after leaving the court.

Woodring will also host the Fifteenth Annual Educational Law and Social Justice Forum, where Washington state cases will be discussed with invited authors, during the Back2Bellingham weekend on Friday, May 17.

This event is free and open to the public.
