Western Students Against Violence to hold fundraiser for education in India, relief in Nepal

Western Students Against Violence is collaborating with the Institute for Village Studies as well as student groups at Western Washington University to put on the Social Awareness in Village Education gala June 5. The second annual event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Bellingham YWCA Ballroom.

The primary focus of the event is to provide sponsors for disadvantaged girls and women in India so they can pursue an education and have access to healthcare services. This evening intends to raise awareness on issues concerning privilege, race, education and women's empowerment. All proceeds from the gala will go towards international grassroots organizations.

In the wake of recent tragedies, 30 percent of the funds raised at this event will go to Sahayatri Nepal for disaster relief efforts. This is an organization run by a local woman for underserved female community members and their children.

The entrance fee for the gala will be $12 for students and $16 for non-students. Tickets will be available pre-sale online through the WWU Box Office and at the door at the start of the event.

The gala will include a presentation, local performers, a silent auction, henna artists and refreshments from India Grill. For more information, contact westernstudentsagainstviolence@gmail.com. For disability accommodations, call 206-459-0029.
