Western event in Mount Vernon focuses on future of teacher education

Ken Zeichner, Boeing Professor of Teacher Education at the University of Washington, will be the featured speaker during an event on teacher education from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 27, at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education, the WWU Office of the Provost and Western’s Extended Education. Anyone interested in the future of teacher education is encouraged to attend. Coffee and dessert will be served.

Zeichner is one of the top scholars in the nation whose work focuses on teacher education; his talk will focus on promising practices for teacher education.

“This special event will describe and discuss alternative, innovative and forward-thinking approaches to teacher education,” said Francisco Rios, Dean of Woodring College of Education. “I believe the time is right for such a discussion: there are important opportunities that may be available to us to pursue a new model of teacher education and it speaks to an ethic of educational renewal central to our work.”

On Saturday, April 28, Woodring College has invited about 45 people, including Woodring College faculty, other Western faculty and professionals from across the region, to a follow-up to Zeichner’s discussion about alternative approaches to teacher education as they might get enacted at Western.
