Western Announces Formation of Enrollment & Student Services Advisory Council

Western Washington University Vice President of Enrollment & Student Services Melynda Huskey has announced the formation of a new advisory group to consult with and advise Huskey on issues and opportunities impacting student life.

The Enrollment & Student Services Advisory Council will be made up of about 15 students, and will meet with Huskey monthly during the school year, with lunch provided, to discuss campus concerns and questions of importance to the group.

“We need more mechanisms to engage with students directly that are low impact for them, and high impact for the university,” Huskey said, and added that the group will be constituted not only of undergraduates from the main campus in Bellingham, but potentially graduate students and students from the university’s other locations as well.

“The council will be a great opportunity for students to provide direct, individual feedback on the topics that are most important to them. It will also be a learning platform for them to understand how decision-making processes work at Western, which can sometimes seem a bit murky and opaque if you don’t know how the structures work.”

Huskey said the information gathered in the meetings will be helpful in two ways.

First, students will get to raise questions or concerns in a direct way and bring them to her attention so that she can act. Secondly, Huskey will be able to  gain feedback on ongoing policies, procedures, or action items in place on the campus, and how they are impacting the student body.

Huskey said interested students should apply by emailing her at vpsa.office@wwu.edu with their name, contact information, major, and their year in school, as well as a brief paragraph (4 or 5 sentences at most) describing why they would like to serve on the council.

Applications are due by Nov. 25.  Huskey said she will announce the council following the Thanksgiving holiday, and the council will begin meeting in January.
