Western’s RN-to-BSN students to present on community health and organizational change June 4

Western Washington University’s RN-to-BSN Program will host “Community Partnerships: Improving Health in Whatcom County” from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, June 4 in room 464 of the Viking Union on Western’s campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will provide current RN-to-BSN students the opportunity to share findings from their practice projects from two courses they completed this quarter: Community Health for Vulnerable Populations and Organizational Change for Quality sand Safety in Healthcare.

A total of 24 students will present during nine sessions running from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Each session will highlight findings at practice partner sites, including PeaceHealth, the Whatcom County Health Department, Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College Nursing Programs, Bellingham Senior Activity Center and the Whatcom Alliance for Health Advancement.

The session schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 8:30 a.m. – Wellness Promotion for Older Adults
  • 8:50 a.m. – Nurses and Disaster Preparedness in Whatcom County
  • 9:10 a.m. – Improving Access to Dental Services in Whatcom County
  • 9:30 a.m. – Reducing Transmission of Communicable Diseases in Childcare Centers
  • 9:50 a.m. – Reducing Transmission of Hepatitis C in Whatcom County
  • 10:30 a.m. – Nutrition and Weight in Children of Head Start Programs
  • 10:50 a.m. – Whatcom County ADN Nursing Students and Informing the Development of a Nurse Residency Program at PeaceHealth
  • 11:10 a.m. – Preparing Nurses to Provide End-of-Life Care
  • 11:30 a.m. – Reducing Hospital Readmission Rates for Older Adults

Hourly event parking is available for guests in Lot 6V, located beneath the Viking Union off of North Garden Street. Rates are $2 an hour and can be paid at the pay station located at the lot entrance. Additional parking information can be found online at www.wwu.edu/ps/parking.
