Wellness Program to offer free Nia classes before Fall Quarter starts

Western's Faculty and Staff Wellness Program will be offering a set of free Nia classes on Sept. 13, 15 and 20 from noon to 1 p.m. outside of the Wade King Student Recreation Center.

Inspired by the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts, Nia is a transformational movement practice anchored in body-centered awareness. The practice draws on the chemistry of nine movement forms: Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Jazz, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance, Yoga, the Alexander Technique and the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. This unique blend allows the body to move in fun and free ways that bring health and vitality to every part.

Nia is a barefoot, sensory-based, cardio-movement class set to an invigorating and eclectic mix of music. Class choreography is inspired by the intelligent design of the body and crafted using 52 core moves—danced YOUR BODY’S WAY.

Some of the many benefits of Nia include cardiovascular health, alleviation of stress and anxiety, and increased flexibility, agility, mobility, strength and stability.

Classes are adaptable for all ages and fitness levels—so if you have a body, you can dance Nia! The classes will be taught Western employee Dana Carr, and will be moved indoors in case of rain.
