WebTech's 'Alt Text Tagging Party' a huge success

Web developers across campus attended an Alt Text Tagging Party, hosted by Web Communication Technologies on May 17, to improve their site’s accessibility by making sure images have alt text.

About ten web developers representing departments like Web Communication Technologies (WebTech), Financial Aid, Admissions, Business and Financial Administration (BFA), College of Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA), and Academic Technology User Services (ATUS) all dedicated anywhere from 1 to 3 hours of their time to add alternative (alt) text to their sites’ images.

Images with alt text are more accessible for people using speech-to-text software, people that have images turned off by default, or whenever a site doesn’t load an image properly.

This event was held on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a worldwide day where accessibility-minded web designers, developers, and content creators can participate in or a variety of activities related to digital accessibility.

WebTech sends a big thank you to developers that set aside time to work hard on making site images accessible:

  • Chris Casquilho, CFPA
  • Justene Merriman, CFPA
  • Chris Powell, ATUS
  • Ashley Flinn, Admissions
  • Marc Fromm, Financial Aid
  • Andrew Rans, Business and Financial Administration/Business Services
  • Stephanie Mason, WebTech
  • Alex Waltrip, WebTech
