Drupal Site Building Tips

Adding a link to a document in Drupal

One of the most common questions Webtech receives, is “How do I link to a document on my website”. Often the scenario is that one needs to replace an outdated PDF or include a Word Doc for users of their website. Despite that it appears to be a simple procedure, in Drupal it’s not as intuitive as one would hope. It is a two-step process.

  1. Adding the file to the media library.
  2. Adding the link to the page.

WebTech recently published a simple tutorial on how to use the media library in Drupal 9. Now content editors can learn step-by-step how to add a link to a document file for users to download or print.  The guide includes a list of what media types can be uploaded and defines the multiple parts of the media library.

Remember, if you’re adding documents to the web, please be sure to structure them for accessibility. This not only benefits people with physical or visual impairments, but makes documents easier for everyone to navigate, search and read online.
