Veterans Safe Zone at WWU to hold info sessions on issues important to student veterans

The Veteran Safe Zone program at Western Washington University is offering two upcoming brown-bag information sessions on issues related to veterans.

  • From noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 in Viking Union Room 567, material from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Center for PTSD will be presented with the aim of familiarizing professionals with military culture, terminology, demographics and stressors. The presentation also provides an overview of programs offered by the Department of Defense for managing combat or operational stress, as well as implications for assessment and treatment.
  • From noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 16 in Viking Union Room 567, Jana Brost will present key points from a lecture titled “Veterans On Campus: Lessons Learned and Questions for the Future” by Harold Kudler, a doctor from the Duke University Medical Center.

Membership in the Veteran Safe Zone program is not required to attend the sessions. However, if those wishing to become a part of the Veteran Safe Zone should contact Brost at jana.brost@wwu.edu.

The Veteran Safe Zone is a program is aimed at faculty, staff and administrators to raise awareness of the unique needs and characteristics student veterans have while transitioning to college, as well as the unique barriers this student population faces. As a part of this program, education and training opportunities are available to develop skills to refer veterans to relevant services on campus.
