Undergraduate Research Day in Olympia a huge success

Yesterday was Undergraduate Research Day in Olympia, a day when students from Washington’s six public baccalaureate institutions displayed their work in the Capitol Building and legislators celebrated the important contributions of undergraduate research throughout the state through Senate Resolution 8683, sponsored by Senator Kevin Ranker.

As part of Undergraduate Research Day, WWU computer science student Ted Weber and faculty advisor Dr. Moushumi Sharmin (right) showcased their research on a smoking-cessation app called “MyQuitPal.” Ted has received multiple awards for his work on this project, which helps people quit smoking through an easy-to-use phone application to monitor their moods, behaviors, and progress towards reaching their goals. To learn more, you can find a Western Today article highlighting Ted’s work here and watch a brief video demoing the “MyQuitPal” prototype here.

Western takes pride in offering undergraduate students access to hands-on research and learning opportunities with professors at the peak of their fields.
