Top-ranked Vikings sending three shells to Opening Day Regatta

The nationally top-ranked Western Washington University women's rowing program will have three shells competing at the Opening Day Regatta on Saturday morning at Seattle's Montlake Cut.

The event is annually attended by thousands of spectators, both on land and in boats. It has been a traditional part of the opening of yachting season since 1970.

The Vikings' varsity eight will row in the Erickson Cascade Cup race at 11:20 a.m. against host Washington's junior varsity, Oklahoma and Seattle Pacific.

A Husky boat has won 27 times in the 32-year history of the race. Western's top boat has been victorious in five of six races this spring, the lone loss being to NCAA Division I Gonzaga.
