'Sweater Days' start Oct. 31

help conserve energy: sweater days start Oct. 31
Do you know where your sweater is? Sweater Days, Western’s annual energy reduction campaign, launches Oct. 31! Instead of turning up the heat when it gets chilly, wear your sweaters and extra layers.

Sweater Days began in the early 2000’s to get people thinking and talking about energy conservation.  In 2008 we held our first Sweater Days here at Western to support the reduction Western’s greenhouse gas contributions by lowering campus thermostats to 68 degrees. It has since expanded to raise attention to pollution and inhumane practices in the textile industry across the world. Think globally about how wearing your sweater; you can make an impact! Our energy use here contributes to global climate change and disproportionately affects vulnerable populations across the world.

Rethink fast-fashion during the campaign. The textile industry is the second largest polluter worldwide. Through Craftivism, (crafts and activism), Sweater Days has helped to empower students and staff to contribute to our greater sustainability goals as a campus. You can learn to repair you own clothes at the Sweater Days Mend and Repair Workshop in November, or participate in a clothing swap to find new-to-you items!

Wear your favorite sweater to kick off the start of the 2018-2019 Sweater Days campaign with us in Red Square on October 31 from noon – 4pm. Then, continue to wear your sweaters and extra layers all winter long.
