Students to help broadcast state playoff games on the Internet

A handful of Western Washington University students are in Yakima this week with the Center for New Media to help broadcast Whatcom County high school basketball games live on the Internet.

“We’re excited to bring the WIAA 2A Washington State high school basketball championship games to a wider audience,” Center for New Media Executive Director Suzanne Blais said in a press release. “Going to games is such a huge community event in Whatcom County, and by broadcasting the games on the Internet we are supporting that community connection.”

The sports broadcasting program -- offered as part of the work being done by Center for New Media, Western, Whatcom Community College and long-time local broadcaster Dick Stark -- is composed of students and volunteers who have all committed their time and energy to giving the community the opportunity to watch local teams fight to win the title.

Championship games can be watched live at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/new-media-live. The first broadcast games start on Thursday, Feb. 29.

The Center for New Media is a unique public-private partnership formed to build community, research new media concepts, create vibrant programming, promote media literacy education and distribute original voices through sustainable and exciting channels. Find out more at www.centerfornewmedia.org.
