Students in Service program to be terminated Wednesday

The Students in Service AmeriCorps program is being terminated effective Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Students in Service is a part-time AmeriCorps program that offers education awards to students who volunteer in their communities; the program is managed by Western’s Center for Service-Learning. The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the Students in Service program and has been evaluating policy and procedure compliance in programs across the United States and has decided the SIS program will be terminated.

In the past three years, Western’s SIS members have dedicated 91,785 hours to volunteering in their communities and, in return, received $195,950 in tuition assistance for their hard work and dedication to their volunteer sites. While the program has had many positive impacts on local communities, as well as supporting college students in gaining valuable civic and workforce skills, some of the programs were not in full compliance with the program requirements.

The Center for Service-Learning is proud to have provided a valuable service to Western students and to have been in excellent standing with the SIS program.

Those who are interested in finding out more about the termination of Students in Service should call (360) 650-7542 or email wwusis@wwu.edu.
