Students for Renewable Energy to hold divestment teach-ins

The Associated Students group Students for Renewable Energy Club at Western Washington University is holding two divestment student and alumni teach-ins this week.

The first is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at RE Sources Sustainable Living Center, 2309 Meridian Ave. in Bellingham, and the second is from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in Communications Facility Room 105 on the WWU campus.

Jill MacIntyre Witt, of 350.org and The Climate Reality Project, will present on behalf of SRE on the basics of divestment from fossil fuels and how Western students and alumni can get involved in the ongoing campaign to divest Western.

“Students and alumni, along with faculty and staff of WWU represent a key voice in the divestment movement, one that hasn’t yet received much recognition,” shared Jenny Godwin, co-president of SRE.

SRE has been working to help Western join the international movement of colleges and universities divesting from the fossil fuel industry. The Associated Students Board of Directors recently voted unanimously to urge the WWU Foundation to divest and remove financial ties from activities based on the extraction of fossil fuels, asking for a decision by the end of 2014.
