Student workshop to teach the culture of open-source software development May 9

Western Washington University's Association for Women in Computing and Association for Computing Machinery will hold Open Source Day, a one-day workshop, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in Viking Union Room 565. The event gives participants the opportunity to learn real-world programming skills, gain experience contributing to a project and make connections in the industry.

Open Source Day includes a git tutorial, panel discussion, info on the history and ethics of open-source software, lunch and, of course, an opportunity to work on projects. Everyone, especially beginners, are welcome to this event. It’s free for students and $10 for non-students.

“The value of this event to participants and general community is that it broadens participants knowledge and helps put projects on the resumes of participants,” said Alyssa Pavao, president of AWC and one of the organizers of the event. “It connects people in the community and tech industry with students at Western.”

Western AWC has provided opportunities to women to access any sources easily through leadership experiences, mentoring, outreaching and networking.

Western ACM has supported students academically and professionally for their career goals at Western by workshops and seminars.
