Speaker to explain ISIS and the war on terror Feb. 3

Phyllis Bennis, an American writer, activist and political commentator, will present "Understanding ISIS & the New Global War on Terror" from noon to 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Fairhaven College Auditorium.

The presentation is part of the World Issues Forum winter series.

The global reign of terror and violence from ISIS continues to intensify, despite significant advances from the United States and other nations. With the increased frequency of these attacks and their public displays of defiance, understanding the somewhat mysterious origins of ISIS is crucial. Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies and author of "Understanding ISIS," will pull back the curtain on this organization and its relationship to the war in Iraq. She'll explain  how the United States became so wrapped up in this conflict and address the underlying question on many minds: "Can you really go to war on terror?"

Co-sponsors: WWU Department of Political Science, Whatcom Community College, Veterans for Peace Jonathan J. Santos Chapter 111, Voices for Middle East Peace.

Bennis will also present at 3 p.m. at Whatcom Community College in the Syre Auditorium and at 7 p.m. at Village Books with Whatcom Peace & Justice Center and Voices for Middle East Peace.
