SEA Discovery Center receives donation from the Historic Poulsbo Downtown Association

POULSBO – Western Washington University’s SEA Discovery Center will receive a donation of $6,000 from the Historic Poulsbo Downtown Association (HPDA) during an afternoon event on Friday, Oct. 19.

The donation funds are proceeds from the Waterfront Dance held at the Poulsbo Waterfront Park in August 2018. Sponsored by the Port of Poulsbo, the Historic Downtown Poulsbo Association, and the City of Poulsbo, the Waterfront Dance is an annual family-friendly event currently in its 110th year. The SEA Discovery Center supported this year’s festivities through the organization of activities and prizes for kids in attendance.

The event starts at 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, at the SEA Discovery Center. Light refreshments will be served.

Bill Austin, longtime Poulsbo entrepreneur and marine science advocate, will present the donation to Sabah Randhawa, president of Western Washington University. HPDA members, the Waterfront Dance Committee, and elected officials including Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson, will also attend. Light refreshments will be served.

“We are thrilled to be receiving the proceeds from the Poulsbo Waterfront Dance, which will help support SEA Discovery Center's Early Childhood Education Program for youth in pre-school through second grade. It's through community support such as this that enables SEA to continue to offer programming," said Denise Kilkenny, associate director of education and outreach at the SEA Discovery Center.

The SEA Discovery Center is a free public aquarium featuring marine life and habitats from local waters. Originally established in the 1980s, management of the center was officially transferred to Western on May 24, 2016.

The center is part of Western’s commitment to continue to provide for the educational needs of learners of all ages on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. Western also partners with the City of Poulsbo to continue the mission of supporting marine education at the Poulsbo waterfront.
