Keck Foundation Scientific Research Grants

Concept paper due to Vice Provost for Research by Jan. 17

This program provides grants of $500k - $2M supporting single-investigator or collaborative projects in two specific areas: (1) science and engineering, and (2) medical research.  There are two application windows annually and only one proposal per area per institution per window is allowed.  If you are considering applying in the next window (proposals due May 1), you should first submit a 1-page concept paper to RSP no later than January 17.  Keck program staff are rather particular about how they like to communicate with prospective applicants.  All communication must be through the university’s sponsored programs office (do not contact them directly yourself).  RSP staff will share and discuss your concept paper with the cognizant program officer and receive their feedback in a scheduled phone call during the week of Jan 20, which will then be shared with you.  Based on prior experience, Keck staff read concept papers carefully and provide very useful, very direct feedback.

Additional information: Keck strongly prefers risky ideas at a very early stage; concepts that have been proven and published, even in preliminary form, are at a disadvantage.  The funding rate for this program is less than 20%.
