Ride-Share Safety Tips from University Police

After a recent series of violent incidents against female students using ride-shares, including the murder of one student at The University of South Carolina, WWU Assistant Police Chief Keith Williams had these important safety tips to consider when using a ride-share service.

First, you should always make sure the driver is the same person the ride-sharing app notified you was coming. Both Lyft and Uber offer the driver’s name, a photo of the driver; and the make, model and color of the car. If the driver is not who you requested, make sure to verify the license plate information.

Second, make sure to look at the driver’s rating on the app. Uber drivers can also rate passengers. This rating system encourages positive interaction.

Third, it is recommended not to sit in the front seat. Many of the recorded incidents have happened to passengers riding up front.

Fourth, don’t drink too much. While it is always a good idea to call for a ride if you have been drinking, many of the recent violent cases reported around the county involved a rider who had too much alcohol. In addition, whenever possible, do not ride alone.

Fifth, never pay with cash. Both Lyft and Uber charge riders through the app so there is no need to exchange cash. If you are asked to pay in cash this should be an immediate red flag; leave the vehicle before starting the ride in those situations.

Ride-sharing apps can be extremely helpful when used properly. Always make sure to verify driver information and do not travel alone for the safest possible ride.
