BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s Academy for Lifelong Learning offers a summer program for adults, with courses beginning as soon as May 18.

Academy for Lifelong Learning gives adults a spectrum of academic and cultural experiences inspired by the belief that “a curious mind never retires.” Programs include traditional liberal arts and sciences topics with an emphasis on interdisciplinary exploration. Formats that encourage discussion and exchange of knowledge will be utilized during sessions.

The length of the programs can vary from one day to six weeks. Courses beginning soon are:

  • Whatcom Farms: Getting to Know the Dairy Industry (2 sessions) – The course presents participants an opportunity to see an inside view of the economics and natural resource management challenges facing our local dairy industry, as well as a field tour featuring diverse dairy operations. The course meets May 23 and May 30.
  • Seattle Symphony Excursion (1 day) - Participants will spend a day in Seattle and see “Capriccio Espagnol,” a celebration of Spanish musical tradition. There is a pre-performance lecture included in the ticket price. The excursion takes place June 10.
  • Lessons from Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami: March 2011 (1 day) - Scientists and emergency managers have been seeking lessons from the 2011 disaster in Japan; it is helping scientists to better understand how earthquakes and tsunamis are produced.
