WWU Youth Programs to Host Girl-Powered GEMS Academy on March 5

Western Washington University Youth Programs will host a new event, Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) Academy, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at Western’s Science Resource Center.

Designed for girls in grades 5-8 to provide a safe and empowering environment to explore STEM fields, GEMS Academy provides an opportunity for hands-on learning in an inspiring environment with Western professors and students, as well as science, technology, engineering and math professionals. Students may choose from a variety of different subjects to explore, ranging from engineering design to veterinary science.

There will also be additional activities for students to participate in, including hearing keynote speaker Catherine Clark, the dean of Western’s College of Sciences and Technology; having lunch on Western’s campus; and earning a certificate at the end of the day.

The cost to participate in GEMS Academy is $39 per student, which includes lunch.

Students are asked to bring a jacket, water bottle, snack, paper, pencils and a curious mind.
