WWU SBDC Counselor Eric Grimstead Recognized as 'State Star'

Eric Grimstead, a certified business advisor with the WWU Small Business Development Center (SBDC), recently received the Association of Small Business Development Center's coveted ‘State Star’ Award in recognition of his contributions to the state SBDC program.

The award is given annually to an outstanding SBDC consultant from each state; criteria include showing a strong commitment to small business success; making significant contributions to the state SBDC program; and being an exemplary performer.

Grimstead has been working for the SBDC since 2008 and enjoys helping clients solve complex business problems. During his time with the SBDC, Grimstead has counseled hundreds of clients throughout Whatcom County and his clients have reported an excess of $28 million in economic impact to the Small Business Administration. SBA's measurement for economic impact includes change in sales, capital infusion, jobs created, and jobs retained. In 2019 alone, he created or saved over 90 jobs in his community.

“Eric is a tremendous asset to Whatcom County’s small business community. His passion for helping businesses start and grow, technical expertise, and contagious energy reflect in tangible outcomes for our local small businesses,” said WWU SBDC director CJ Seitz.

Grimstead said he enjoys working with clients to increase business profitability, wealth and success by uncovering hidden assets, overlooked opportunities, and undervalued possibilities. He is a recognized business growth strategist and direct response marketing expert. He has presented several training programs on how to leverage social media and digital marketing to grow sales and increase brand awareness.

One of Grimstead’s clients is Andi Vann, owner and founder of Pure Bliss Desserts in Bellingham.

"I needed guidance in understanding exactly what it would take to create a thriving business that would grow and be sustainable for my work/life balance. My favorite part of working with Eric Grimstead is being able to talk through issues that arise within my business and create solutions that not only eradicate my concerns but create a healthier business, streamline systems and boost morale. The SBDC has been an essential part of our success. From personnel challenges, to number crunching, to understanding the market and our customer base, I always walk away from each meeting with Eric with set goals and a plan that will help our business thrive," Vann said.
