WWU’s College of Science and Engineering to Host ‘STEM Mix It Up: Science in Pop Culture’ Nov. 12

Western Washington University’s College of Science and Engineering will host “STEM Mix It Up: Science in Pop Culture” from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 in the VU Multipurpose Room.

The event is free and open to the public

STEM Mix It Up aims to show diversity in the science fields and the real faces of science. The event’s goal is to ask questions such as: “How is STEM portrayed in movies, TV, games, comics and literature?” and “Who is being portrayed as scientists and STEM professionals?

Highlights include a panel discussion, trivia contest, food, photo booth and raffle prizes. A second raffle ticket will be available for attendees who dress as a historical or fictional scientist.

“The goal of our event is to foster inclusion in STEM on a multitude of levels by using love for science fiction portrayed in pop culture to explore who we are as scientists, mathematicians and engineers outside of the classroom,” Regina Barber DeGraaff, Western’s STEM Diversity and Outreach specialist said. “By presenting the various scientific faces in media and at Western we hope to change the stereotypical view of a ‘Scientist’ and to encourage everyone to become more involved in STEM.”

The event is sponsored by the College of Science of Engineering and its student clubs.
